Planting Roots in Virginia: Expanding Access to Herbal Wellness
In Franklin County, Virginia, nestled within the rolling landscape of the Appalachian region, a 125,000-square-foot manufacturing facility is taking shape. Slated to begin operations in fall 2026, this new space will eventually produce the full range of Traditional Medicinals teas, serving communities across the Eastern United States.
For many brands, expansion is about speed or scale. Here, it is about proximity and intention.
By placing a facility closer to customers east of the Mississippi River, distribution routes become shorter, emissions are intended to be reduced, and access improves. It is a logistical decision, yes, but also an environmental one. The Virginia facility will work in tandem with the California operations, each serving its region with greater efficiency and care.
From the ground up, the space integrates energy‑efficient systems and sustainable design principles, all aimed at reducing the environmental impact of building.
Why Virginia, and why now
The choice to build in Virginia was not by chance. In 2025, we officially broke ground on our new facility in Rocky Mount, marking the beginning of a long-term investment in Franklin County and the surrounding region.
This expansion has been shaped through collaboration. Partnerships with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Franklin County, and the Roanoke Regional Partnership have helped bring this vision to life, alongside workforce development support through the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program. It is also an invitation to participate in a region with deep agricultural traditions, rich plant knowledge, and communities that understand the value of land stewardship. More than building infrastructure, it is an opportunity to build meaningful, lasting relationships.
As we continue building in Rocky Mount, we look forward to growing a team within the local community. New roles will be shared as they become available, and we invite those who feel aligned with our mission to follow along and explore opportunities to join us.
Designed for long-term sustainability
At Traditional Medicinals, we value people, plants, and the planet. As part of our commitment to caring for the planet, we are approaching the design of this facility with sustainability in mind.
This includes investing in renewable energy, water stewardship, and energy-efficient systems that support long-term environmental care. We are working toward sourcing 100% renewable electricity, including hydropower, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and operating fully electrified facilities with high-efficiency HVAC systems. We are also taking a watershed-based approach to water, incorporating onsite bioswales that help filter stormwater, reduce flooding, and support groundwater recharge.
These choices are part of a broader commitment to care for the planet while building for the future. By designing with intention, we aim to reduce our environmental footprint and support a more resilient way of doing business, one that honors both people and the places we are part of.

Rooted in relationships across every step
As Traditional Medicinals enters southwestern Virginia, the focus is not only on production, but on connection.
We are engaging with organizations such as Appalachian Sustainable Development and the Wild Stewards Alliance, which connects farmers and collectors to fair-wage markets while providing training and infrastructure.
At the same time, collaboration with Virginia Tech is helping shape the future of herbal sourcing. Together, we are studying how slippery elm can be cultivated more sustainably, moving beyond reliance on wild harvesting alone. The project explores agroforestry models, coppicing, and improved bark-harvest techniques to support plant regeneration, long-term supply, and ecological integrity.
Locally, relationships are also forming with community spaces like Friends of Ferrum Park, which stewards Ferrum Park as a vibrant gathering place for the region. With trails, open spaces, and community events, the park offers a place for connection, recreation, and shared experiences rooted in the local landscape.
We are also beginning to build relationships with local service organizations, including the Rotary Club of Rocky Mount, a nonprofit organization serving the Rocky Mount and Franklin County community. In February 2026, Traditional Medicinals was honored to become the club’s first corporate member, an early step in our commitment to showing up as an active and engaged part of the community.
More than a facility. A reflection of what growth can look like
There is a broader story unfolding here.
As Traditional Medicinals looks ahead, this expansion represents something larger than increased capacity. It is about access. More people being able to find herbal wellness where they already shop, in ways that fit into their everyday lives. It creates the space to continue evolving thoughtfully, bringing new offerings forward while staying rooted in quality, sustainability, and fair sourcing.
The tension between purpose and growth is something many businesses navigate. This moment offers a different perspective. That it is possible to expand without losing what matters most. To grow reach while staying grounded in values. To build something new while honoring the relationships that make it possible.
Fifty years in, this is one step in an ongoing path. One that continues to be shaped by the relationships, responsibilities, and values that guide the work.
And in the hills of Virginia, that next chapter is already taking root.
