8 Helpful Tips for Vacation Constipation

Sudden changes in your usual routine can contribute to digestive problems and can cause vacation constipation. This is why people often end up constipated when they’re on vacation. If you’ve experienced this, you know it can really put a damper on what should be an enjoyable time.

There are many potential culprits when it comes to vacation constipation. For example, vacation time often means relaxing more – and exercising less. You’re more inclined to indulge in rich foods or alter your normal diet during a vacation – both can wreak havoc with your digestion.

If you’re travelling to a place where the drinking water is questionable, the altitude is high or the weather is hot, you may become mildly dehydrated and constipated as a result. Also, if you are constantly on the go or in locations with limited access to a restroom – or to restrooms that are less than desirable – you may end up resisting the urge to have a bowel movement, which can also lead to constipation.

In order to reduce the chances of constipation, follow these helpful tips:

  • Get plenty of exercise – If you’re staying at hotels choose ones that have a gym; walk rather than drive when sightseeing. Exercise helps promote good digestion.
  • Eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains when dining out.
  • Drink plenty of water – keep bottled water with you when you’re travelling so you don’t get dehydrated and limit caffeinated beverages like coffee and colas.
  • Maintain a regular eating schedule as much as possible – keeping a normal eating schedule will help keep you regular and prevent constipation.
  • Watch your alcohol intake- alcohol can cause dehydration.
  • Get sufficient sleep.
  • Pack healthy snacks for travel time, especially if you are driving. You will be less tempted to eat fast food or highly refined, fatty snacks that can contribute to problems with constipation.
  • Bring Smooth Move® with you. If you do get constipated, drink one warm cup of Smooth Move® tea before going to bed. Smooth Move® is a caffeine free, herbal laxative tea that works gently overnight to get you back on track in the morning.
