Our Beginnings

A letter from our co-founder, Drake Sadler.

In early 1974, three close friends started Traditional Medicinals in a small herb shop along the Russian River in Northern California. We founded this company with the intention of promoting herbal wellness, while preserving the ancient plant knowledge of Traditional Herbal Medicine (THM).

At the time, herb tea infusions for wellness had all but faded away in the United States, and we wanted to share these reliable herbal formulas with the public in convenient tea bags.

Over the decades that followed, we introduced millions of health conscious consumers to these teas and Traditional Medicinals expanded dramatically. Today, we’ve made well over a billion cups of tea at our beautiful, solar and wind powered country facility, and, what used to be considered “alternative” products, have now become mainstream and can be found in stores across North America.

From our simple beginnings we have been able to share the wonder of herbs and pass along the knowledge contained in the world’s great systems of Traditional Herbal Medicine. To this we have added sophisticated quality assurance and scientific testing to ensure you always receive consistently reliable products. So, while our business has grown and evolved, the over 100 employee owners of Traditional Medicinals remain rooted in the serious and spirited commitment with which we began nearly forty years ago.
