It’s Fair Trade Month and we’ve started it off in style!
We were honored to attend Fair Trade USA’s premier event in San Francisco. Hosted at a green nightclub and sustainable restaurant called Temple, we were able to share our Fair Trade Teas while making friends and enjoying many other Fair Trade products, like delicious chocolates, hummus and coffee. We are really pleased to see how many products are embracing the Fair Trade Certification standards.The theme of this year’s Fair Trade Month is “Every Purchase Matters.” Because everything we eat and drink is grown by a real person and effects a family or many families, the theme of the month helps us remember to personally connect with the people whom produce the things we buy. It’s also to hear about what aspect of Fair Trade matters most to you.
According to TransFair USA: “Fair Trade is a partnership between tea pickers, tea traders, and tea drinkers. Fair Trade Certified means that:
- The farm where the tea or herbs are grown meets specific standards for the wages, living situation, and working conditions of its pickers;
- For every tea purchase, a Fair Trade premium goes directly back to the tea workers themselves. A committee, elected by the workers, decides how these funds will be used to meet the community's most serious needs. Tea workers have used Fair Trade premiums to hire school teachers, build maternal health clinics, guarantee child care, develop pension funds and bring electricity to their villages, among other projects."
