Turmeric’s wide appeal may have recently gained momentum here in the West, but this healing rhizome (or horizontal root) has been celebrated as a cooking spice, a dye, and as a medicinal herb in India for over 3,000 years. Used in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine to support everything from digestion and the respiratory system to everyday discomfort, it’s no wonder turmeric has enjoyed such an enduring legacy.
Tapping into that ancient wisdom, we are pleased to introduce our newest tea blend to Traditional Medicinals’ apothecary: Turmeric with Meadowsweet & Ginger. Reinforced with meadowsweet—historically used in Traditional European Herbal Medicine much like turmeric is in Ayurveda—and the warming properties of ginger, our innovative formula supports a healthy response to inflammation associated with exercise, while also promoting healthy digestion.* Our team goes through great lengths to make sure our products do what they say they are going to do. This process starts with formulation, carries through into responsible sourcing, and ends in our laboratory to confirm what we’ve worked hard to achieve.
The Theory Behind this Innovative Formulation
For years, we’ve wanted to create a tea that addresses post-exercise inflammation. As far as we’re concerned, inflammation often gets a bad rap. And what a shame, because it can be a useful signal, particularly after exercise.* Turmeric, meadowsweet and ginger all honor that indication, creating a combined effect where the whole of our formula is greater than the sum of its parts. Our formulation team aims to target the gut first, since that is where the herbs first interact with the body. After that, the body is ready to address the everyday aches and pains associated with strenuous physical activity and lifestyle.* As herbalists, we believe that the health of the body depends on the long-term health of the gut, which is why we have formulated our tea to be a trifecta of herbal wisdom and soothing relief.*
Organic Farming & Collecting Helps Us Achieve Pharmacopoeial-Grade Quality
While our formulators may be reaching new heights in herbal medicinal innovation, the success of our formula depends on our partner-growers and collectors around the world, who share our commitment to organic practices and use non-GMO plants—essential in achieving the pharmacopoeial– and high-grade quality we seek. We source some of our favorite turmeric (Curcuma longa) from Sri Lanka, where growers harvest the rhizomes at the end of the summer, then leave them to dry to attain their characteristic, vibrant orange color. Both turmeric and ginger (Zingiber officinale) thrive in humid, tropical climates typically found in South Asia, and our ginger is sourced from Fair Trade-certified growers in India and Sri Lanka. Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) grows throughout Europe, where it favors damp meadows and riverbanks; we currently source ours from France.

Organic Farming & Collecting Helps Us Achieve the High Quality We Seek
Once these herbs arrive in our warehouse, Traditional Medicinals’ resident chemists and microscopists test every batch of herbs to ensure that we are getting the pharmacopoeial-grade quality we seek in our active ingredients—in this case, Turmeric and Meadowsweet. The team confirms this by testing species identity, purity, concentration of essential oils, taste, and smell. In order to be classified as pharmacopoeial grade, turmeric needs to contain at least 2.5% essential oils. Once the levels meet our standards, or surpass them in the case of turmeric, then our herbs are ready to be blended, packaged into tea bags and sent to you.
Modern life exposes us to so many factors which can negatively influence the health of the gut, be it stress, pollutants, or even certain foods. Given turmeric’s many benefits and the high quality we’re able to achieve, drinking this tea is an easy way to help support the health of your digestive system.
